How to build a website
These days it seems like everyone has a website. Many websites are designed for personal reasons such as a place for the designer’s friends and family to look at pictures of their dog, their children, their remodeled kitchen, whatever they think may be of interest. On the other hand, websites are an excellent professional tool to promote business, sales, and services. Whatever your reason for wanting to build a website, it may seem daunting, but anyone can do it.
To begin, you will need access to a computer and basic computer skills. You will also need an HTML editor, which is a webpage construction tool and is available either in software packages or for free online. The last thing you will need is a webserver, or simply put, a place to publish your website.
Building a website can be fun. Determine your objective for designing a website and decide what you want to put on each page. The home page is like the cover of a book and while it can exist by itself, if you include other pages in your site, it will serve as the primary page and first page viewers will find. You can add pictures, sound, and text to your page as desired, but keep in mind that graphics take longer to load and so you may not want to inconvenience visitors with a page that takes all day to download.
Unless you know computer programming, the HTML editor is necessary for translating everything you want on your site into a language that the hosting computer will understand. The HTML editor will assist you in building the page and allows for all of the files you wish to use. Which HTML editor you use will be up to your personal preference.
Once your page is designed, you will need a host. This is where your page will be uploaded in order to be viewed online by everyone else. Some Internet Service Providers (ISPs) offer free hosting in exchange for placing banners or sponsor ads on your site. This is obviously a cost-effective way to start learning how to build a website, but is not very professional. If your site is eventually intended to be professional, you will want to use a professional hosting service and they start for as little as $15.00 a month.
